Knowing that my audience here is mostly lawyers, I know that there’s a danger of being too abstract when it comes to trying to talk about how we pay attention to the things that matter most to us. Nevertheless, I thought John O’Donohue’s poem below worth sharing. Depending on your orientation, you might call this a prayer, a mediation, or a blessing. Whatever you call it, these are good words to offer as you begin your day. May they inspire you to live the life that you would love.
Welcomes the wonder of this day,
The field of brightness it creates
Offering time for each thing
To arise and illuminate.
The quiet loyalty of breath,
The tent of thought where I shelter,
Waves of desire I am shore to
And all beauty drawn to the eye.
To the invisible geography
That invites me to new frontiers,
To break the dead shell of yesterdays,
To risk being disturbed and changed.
To live the life that I would love,
To postpone my dream no longer
But do at last what I came here for
And waste my heart on fear no more.
